The Scottish Tourist Guides Association is the accrediting body for tourist guides in Scotland. It is also the membership association of professionally qualified, Blue Badge guides in Scotland. It is a non-profit making organisation with much of the running of the Association being carried out by volunteers.

STGA Members are self-employed and responsible for their own income. Guides travel throughout the whole of Scotland with visitors on extended tours of a general or specialist nature and also work on city tours, day tours and with business and conference groups.

Eligibility
Candidates for Membership of the STGA will have appropriate tertiary/post school education, experience of working with groups of people, foreign language fluency and/or experience and qualifications in outdoor pursuits or other skills useful to a tourist guide.

Selection
Qualified applicants will be invited to a selection interview, which will include verification of qualifications and language skills claimed.

Training Course
A preliminary Introductory Short Course of lectures and workshops gives an insight into the knowledge and skills needed by a guide and time for assessment of suitability. Successful completion of the Introductory Short Course is required for qualification for Student Associate Membership of the STGA.

Training towards final membership examination will take 2 years part-time study. The course covers Core Knowledge, Professional Guiding Skills and Regional Studies

Cost
Details of the cost will be advised by the STGA. Fees are payable in instalments and students are expected to finance their own training. A Career Development Loan or local enterprise funding may be available

Next Entry
Entry is biennial and next training course starts on 29 April 2006. Interviews will take place from 6 th to 10 th February to select candidates for the Introductory Course, which will be held on the 18 th and 19 th March.

Preference will be given to candidates who are fluent in a foreign language and are willing to travel throughout Scotland. There are particular opportunities for people who speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Central and Eastern European languages.

Applications must be received by 6th January 2006.
